#ClarksvilleJuneteenth

Clarksville Juneteenth Block Party is hosted and produced by Black Clarksville. The purpose of the Clarksville Juneteenth Block Party is to celebrate Freedom Day, empower the black community, and support black businesses and organizations.

What is Juneteenth?

On June 19, 1865, General Granger and his military force arrived in Galveston, Texas and the forces were strong enough to overcome resistance to the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is a combination of “June” and “nineteenth,” in honor of the day that Granger announced the abolition of slavery in Texas. The holiday is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day

Why celebrate Juneteenth in Tennessee?

Though August 8, 1863, commemorates freedom for Tennessee, there was still a significant number of enslaved Black people in America. Celebrating Juneteenth in Tennessee is our way of standing united with our brothers and sisters across the United States. The holiday highlights that even though freedom and justice in the United States have always been delayed for black people, still we RISE!
